A front elevation rendering of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., drawn in ink on paper, shows the building's main facade as it would appear when viewed straight on. Elevations like this were used to plan windows, doorways, and ornament to scale before and during construction. The library's principal building, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897, after the collection had outgrown its space in the Capitol. Its Beaux-Arts facade is rich in sculpture and detail, and a drawing like this one shows how carefully those decorative elements were planned.
