Rather than the building's famous main façade, this ink drawing shows a side elevation of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Such flat, measured views record proportions, window rhythm, and ornament, and architects and builders used them to plan and approve construction. The library's main building, the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed in the Beaux-Arts style by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897 after years of work. Drawings like this one now help show how the design was worked out on paper.
