An elevation drawing shows a building's exterior as a flat, straight-on view, with no perspective, so the viewer can measure its proportions. This sheet records the side of the Library of Congress, the institution whose main building on Capitol Hill, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 after the library outgrew its quarters in the U.S. Capitol. The drawing is in ink on paper, a format architects and draftsmen used to plan and record construction. Its cool, precise linework makes it a useful record of how the building's massing and ornament were organized.
