This is a side elevation, a flat architectural drawing that shows the building's exterior wall straight on, without perspective or shadow. It records the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., constructed in the 1890s and opened in 1897 to house a collection that had outgrown the Capitol. Designed by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, the building blends classical and Renaissance-inspired ornament. Drawings like this one let viewers study the rhythm of windows, columns, and cornices that gave the structure its ornate yet orderly presence.
