Few drawings of the Library of Congress show a Gothic-style scheme for a Judiciary Square site, which sets this set of plans apart from the building that was finally erected. The record describes a front elevation, a site plan, and a perspective view, so the drawings would have shown both how the building would stand on its ground and how it would look from the street. The library was housed in the U.S. Capitol for most of the nineteenth century, and its growing collection pushed Congress to consider purpose-built quarters. The Jefferson Building, completed in 1897 on the Capitol grounds, took a very different architectural form from the one shown here.
