This is a side elevation, a flat, measured drawing of one flank of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., with its height, window bays, and ornament set out without perspective. Drawings like this helped builders and planners check proportions and coordinate construction. The library's main building, now the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897 as a major Beaux-Arts civic landmark. Such elevations preserve architectural detail that photographs often miss, which is why researchers value them.
