Rather than showing the building as a visitor would see it, this ink drawing offers a flat side elevation, a straight-on profile that records height, window spacing and wall detailing without perspective. Architects and builders relied on sheets like this to plan construction and check proportions before work began. The Library of Congress grew out of a small congressional collection, and its first purpose-built home, the Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill, opened in 1897 after Congress authorized it in 1886. Drawings of this kind document the design intentions behind the Library's buildings.
