This ink rendering shows the Library of Congress building in Washington as its architects hoped it would look, drawn between 1886 and 1888. Congress had decided by 1886 that the growing library needed a building of its own rather than more space in the Capitol, and the design by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz was refined through these years before construction began around 1890. Presentation drawings like this one were made to help officials and the public picture a finished building, so they show the structure's ornament and massing in an idealized light.
