An ink rendering of the Library of Congress as it was planned in the late 1880s shows the building's intended exterior before any stone was laid. Presentation drawings like this one were made to help officials and the public picture a proposed structure, and they often polished the design with idealized light, shadow, and surrounding detail. The Library's design was developed in the years after Congress turned its books out of the Capitol, and the building that rose in its place, completed in 1897, was the result of those plans. Comparing the drawing with the finished Jefferson Building shows how the design changed over the years.
