This perspective rendering of a Washington, D.C. exterior comes from the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering drawings, and it is a drawing, not a photograph. Its heliotype base, a photomechanical reproduction method, was hand-tinted with watercolor, a common way to make presentation drawings look finished and lifelike. Such renderings helped architects show clients and committees how a building would sit in its setting before construction began. Readers interested in the Library's own buildings may want to compare it with the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897.
