This exterior perspective rendering takes its subject from the Library of Congress, and it shows how the building was pictured on paper before it stood finished on Capitol Hill. The image is a heliotype, a photomechanical reproduction of a drawing, with watercolor added by hand to give the design color and depth. The Library's Italian Renaissance Revival building, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, was constructed between 1890 and 1897 as a showpiece of the Gilded Age. Presentation drawings like this one helped officials and the public imagine the finished structure.
