This view looks south across an interior courtyard of the Library of Congress in Washington, a space that brought daylight and air into the heavy masonry of the Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill. The print was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio that photographed government offices, officials and city scenes for decades. The record's date of roughly 1930 to 1940 is an estimate from an old caption card and has not been verified. Views like this one help show how the Beaux-Arts building was planned around courtyards and light.
