Rather than a finished building, this print records architectural drawings for the courtyard of the Library of Congress, photographed in April 1889 while the library's new home existed mainly on paper. Congress had moved the collection out of its cramped quarters in the Capitol and approved a separate building on Capitol Hill, and the plans were still being refined when construction began in 1890. The caption card is old and its details are not fully confirmed, but the sheet captures the planning stage of a building meant to house the nation's growing book collection.
