This photograph reproduces one of a numbered set of side elevation drawings, no. VII, for the building the Library of Congress would occupy in Washington. The record dates it to November 1886, a year when Congress was moving toward a separate home for a library that had long been crowded into the Capitol. Elevations like this one let planners and builders study the exterior proportions and details of the design before construction began. Such drawings show how the architects intended the long side walls and ornament to look from the street.
