The plaster and stucco work on the reading room dome and lantern is the focus of this record, which documents a single interior element of the Library of Congress Main Building, now named for Thomas Jefferson. The building was constructed between 1890 and 1897 under architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, and its interior ornament was carried out by a large team of skilled craftsmen. The circular reading room beneath the dome became one of the most admired spaces when the library opened, and the lantern above it let daylight into the room. The caption card carries no date, so the image is best read as construction-era documentation.
