The southwest corridor on the first floor of the Library of Congress's Main Building, shown here in close detail, was photographed by Louden, a Washington photographer whose work documented the building's interior fittings. The caption card lists lamps and architectural drawings among its subjects, pointing to the decorative lighting fixtures and ornamental detailing that gave the Beaux-Arts structure much of its character. The Main Building, completed in 1897 on Capitol Hill, was designed to showcase the nation's knowledge and craftsmanship, so its corridors were built to impress as much as to function. The card carries no date, so the exact year of this view remains uncertain.
