This view shows the Great Hall of the Library of Congress while the building was still under construction, before the marble and mosaic work that would later define its interior. Construction of the Thomas Jefferson Building began in 1890 under architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, and the library did not open to the public until 1897. The October 16, 1894 date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, but it places the photograph during the years the building's interior was taking shape.
