Set beneath the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, this view zooms in on a section of the Great Hall, the building's central space, where marble, decorative mosaic work and sculpture were meant to express the ambitions of a young national library. The building opened to the public in 1897, and its interiors were a deliberate display of American craft and learning. The photograph is credited to L.C. Handy, a photographer associated with the Library's early image collections. The caption card does not record a date, so the exact year of the exposure is unknown, though the detail of the architectural surfaces is worth studying closely.
