Rising from the floor of the Great Hall, this detail shows the marble grand staircase of the Library of Congress's Jefferson Building, which opened to readers in 1897. The photograph is credited to L.C. Handy, a Washington photographer. The staircase reflects the Beaux-Arts taste of its era, with rich stone surfaces and ornamented railings meant to impress visitors entering the national library. The caption card gives no date, so the year the picture was made is unknown.
