The Great Hall of the Library of Congress, in the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C., is the setting here, and this view zooms in on a detail of its interior rather than the whole room. The building opened in 1897 and was meant to showcase American culture and learning, so its halls were decorated with mosaics, murals, and carved stone to celebrate the arts, sciences, and written knowledge. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of this photograph is unknown, but the detail's ornate finishes reflect the building's original design. Look closely at the decorative surfaces, which were central to the architects' idea of a library as a temple of learning.
