Rather than the full sweep of the room, this view zooms in on one section of the Great Hall in the Jefferson Building, which housed the Library of Congress when it opened in Washington, D.C., in 1897. The hall was designed to present the nation's book collection as a work of art, with marble, bronze, gilt, and painted and mosaic decoration spread across its walls, arches, and stairways. Interior views from around 1902 like this one recorded a building many Americans regarded as a showcase of national ambition and craftsmanship. The ornament shows the Beaux-Arts designers' debt to Renaissance and classical models.
