Few features of the Library of Congress draw the eye like the Minerva mosaic in the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, was a fitting emblem for a national library, and the figure was built from glass tesserae made in Venice as part of the building's decorative program. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897, and its marble halls and mosaics were meant to present learning as a public achievement. The caption card gives no date, so this view is best read as a general record of the hall's interior.
