The Capitol dome rises above a foreground of bells and a busy construction area, placing the building's upper works in the middle of the working site. The cast-iron dome was built between 1855 and 1866 under architect Thomas U. Walter and engineer Montgomery C. Meigs, and the Statue of Freedom was raised to its top in 1863. The caption card gives no date and its details are unverified, so the photograph is best read as a record of that long building campaign in general terms.
