From an elevated vantage point, this engraving looks down on the north wing of the United States Capitol, the section that housed the House of Representatives. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when engravers worked from high viewpoints to show a building's roofs, grounds, and surrounding streets in a single image. The print's caption card gives no date, so its exact making is uncertain, but the Capitol's north wing was a busy center of national lawmaking, and the view offers a useful record of how the complex looked and was laid out in its era.
