Rather than the familiar west front or dome, this print looks outward from the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol, a vantage few photographers chose. The record's reference to the library's architectural and engineering drawing holdings suggests the image was kept as a documentary record of the building's structure and surroundings. The Senate wing was finished in the late 1850s, when the Capitol was being expanded to hold a growing Congress, and views like this one show how the building's bulk and its setting in the young capital fit together. The record does not give a date, so the exact year of the print is uncertain.
