This watercolor interior view shows the Library of Congress room inside the U.S. Capitol as it was planned in 1852, the year after a fire on Christmas Eve, 1851, destroyed much of the Library's collection and the room that held it. The rebuilt room was designed with iron framing and fireproof construction, a response to that loss, and it was built in the Capitol's west central section under architect Thomas U. Walter. The drawing, made in ink and watercolor, records the room's arrangement of shelves, galleries, and light, and it is now held with the Architect of the Capitol's architectural and engineering drawings.
