Rather than a photograph of finished rooms, this is a perspective drawing of the art gallery as its designers imagined it, rendered in ink, colored ink and gouache. The space belongs to the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building, the monumental structure begun in the 1890s to house the institution's growing collections. Interior perspectives like this one let architects and building committees judge proportions, lighting and decoration before construction, and the layered color suggests the intended finish. The drawing survives in the Library's architectural and engineering holdings, and this copy is kept in the Prints and Photographs Division as a reference.
