The rendering shows the Library of Congress room inside the U.S. Capitol as it was planned after a fire swept the building in December 1851 and destroyed much of the collection, which had been built largely from Thomas Jefferson's personal books. Architect Thomas U. Walter led the rebuilding of the chamber, and this ink and watercolor perspective captures the room as he intended it, with its tall bookcases and decorative ceiling. Drawings like this one were used to plan and sell the design to Congress, so they show both the architect's hopes for the space and the finishes that were meant to make the library a showpiece of the Capitol.
