The view shows the interior of the Library of Congress room in the U.S. Capitol, a space that was rebuilt in the early 1850s. A fire in December 1851 destroyed a large part of the library's holdings, roughly two-thirds of its books, and the drawing dates from the year that followed, when plans for a fireproof replacement were taking shape. The ink and watercolor rendering presents the room as an architect's proposed interior, with its arrangement of shelves, galleries, and light. Drawings like this one show how designers imagined a working library within the Capitol's larger building program.
