The Long Room is the main chamber of the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin, and its barrel-vaulted ceiling and two-level oak galleries lined with tall bookcases make it one of the most recognizable reading rooms in the world. The building was completed in the early 1700s, and the room has held the college's oldest and most valuable books ever since, including the Book of Kells on display in a nearby exhibition. Its tiered shelves and wooden gallery ladders are worth studying: the space was built to hold a very large collection in a single open hall, and the arrangement still shapes how visitors see it today.
