Visitors stand behind a green rope at the entrance to the Long Room, the main chamber of the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin, where marble busts line the floor between tall oak bookcases. The room was built in the early 1700s to house the college's growing collection, and its barrel-vaulted ceiling has made it one of the best-known library interiors in Europe. The busts, many of writers, philosophers and scholars, were gathered over the following decades. The rope keeps crowds from wearing down the floor and brushing against the shelves that hold some of the library's oldest books.
