Unlike the many exterior views of New York's public buildings, this one looks inside: a reading room of the New York Public Library, though the record does not say which branch or building. The Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, made the negative, and its early twentieth-century work documents the city's institutions and everyday life. The library's main Fifth Avenue building, with its large open reading rooms, opened in 1911, so this room may reflect that period of expanding public access to books. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified agency data, so the exact room and year remain uncertain.
