A woman stands at the card catalog in the Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress, the room at the heart of the Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897, and its Main Reading Room, with its high domed ceiling and rows of oak desks, was built to be the public face of the nation's library. Card catalogs like this one, with their wall of small wooden drawers, were how researchers found books before computer searches existed. The photograph dates to somewhere between 1930 and 1950, so it captures a long stretch of ordinary library work in the decades before the card system gave way to electronic catalogs.
