Rather than a reading room or a row of volumes, this image shows the bookstack itself, the tiered interior planned to hold a rapidly growing national collection. The original drawing dates to April 1890, when the Library of Congress was still housed in the Capitol and its own building was being planned. The stack design called for iron framing and glass floors, a fireproof approach that reflected widespread concern about fires that had destroyed or damaged libraries in that era. This photographic print was made later, probably between 1940 and 1970, as a reproduction of the earlier drawing.
