This photograph shows the Main Reading Room while it was still under construction in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Work on the building began in 1890, and the library's collections moved into it in 1897, when the domed reading room opened to readers. Scaffolding and unfinished interior work of this kind document the long effort to house the nation's book collections in a monumental structure. The room, with its ring of desks beneath the great dome, became one of the best-known reading spaces in the country.
