Men sit with books in the war library service section of the Red Cross Building at Walter Reed Hospital, a reading space for patients in the Army's Washington hospital. The American Library Association's War Library Service, formed during World War I, sent books to camps, ships and hospitals, and its reading rooms gave wounded and convalescing soldiers a quiet place to pass long hours of recovery. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of commercial views of Washington, D.C., made in the early twentieth century, and it shows how military medicine in the capital attended to the needs of disabled veterans.
