Ernest Peixotto's drawing takes us inside Bates Hall, the main reading room of the Boston Public Library, rather than to the building's exterior that architects and photographers usually favored. Peixotto, a San Francisco-born artist who trained in Paris, worked in wash, opaque white and graphite here, building soft gradations of light across the long vaulted hall. The scene is quiet and orderly, with readers bent over tables beneath rows of arched windows, a reminder of how central public reading rooms were to late nineteenth-century civic life. Bates Hall, completed in 1895, was among the most admired interiors of its day.
