The Boston Public Library's McKim building on Copley Square, with its Italian Renaissance facade, is the subject here, and this color print shows it at the turn of the century. The Detroit Publishing Company made its photochrom prints by a process that combined photography with hand-applied color, giving the stone and surrounding streets a soft, painted look. The library, designed by Charles Follen McKim and opened in 1895, was among the first large American public libraries built to express the idea that books belonged to ordinary citizens as much as to scholars. Its carved inscriptions and open courtyard make it a useful record of how civic architecture was being shaped in these years.
