The setting is the card catalog in the Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building, the domed hall that opened in 1897. Jack Delano, known for his Farm Security Administration photographs of the early 1940s, made this picture in an era when researchers still searched by hand through drawers of index cards rather than on screens. The photograph shows how central the catalog was to daily work in the reading room, and the tidy rows of cabinets hint at the scale of the library's collections.
