The sitter here is reading *Eloyse et Abailard*, the story of Héloïse and Abélard, the twelfth-century scholar and his student whose secret love and surviving letters made them among the most read lovers of the 18th century. Boucher's design, a favorite of Parisian taste, shows a reader absorbed in a book, a pose that suited the period's fascination with private reading. The print was made by Gilles Demarteau, who developed the crayon manner, a technique that imitated the soft strokes of chalk drawings and let printmakers reproduce a drawing's texture in color. Demarteau issued it in Paris, and it is worth looking closely at how the color tones mimic the handmade quality of the original drawing.
