Few children's books printed in Virginia in 1809 have survived, and this title page comes from a small press in Newmarket, where Solomon Henkel printed German-language works for the Shenandoah Valley's German-speaking families. The book, *Ein Christags-Geschenk für kleine Knaben*, presents itself as a collection of conversations offered as a Christmas gift for boys. Its illustration shows a boy and a woman seated together, evidently in conversation. The record describes it as the third children's book printed in Virginia, which shows how early the region's German printers were serving young readers.
