An eagle perches on top of an open book, with a U.S. flag behind it, placing the national emblem and the printed word in one small design. Bookplates like this were pasted inside a book's front cover to show who owned it, and American examples were especially popular from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century, when patriotic imagery often appeared on them. The bald eagle had been part of the Great Seal of the United States since 1782, so its presence here signals civic pride as much as personal property. It is worth noticing how much meaning the designer packed into a label only a few inches across.
