A scribe sits at a sloping desk in a library, pen in hand, in this woodcut illustration for *La Mer des Hystoires*, a French universal chronicle from the incunabula period, the years before 1501 when printing with movable type was new. The image shows a scholarly trade that printing was beginning to replace, since books had long been copied by hand. Woodcuts like this one were often reused across several editions, so the same block might appear in different books. The caption card for this print records no date, and its details are unverified.
