The Library of Congress reading room in the rotunda of the Thomas Jefferson Building is the setting here, rendered in the soft, saturated color of a photochrom print. The Detroit Photographic Company held the exclusive license for the photochrom process in the United States around 1900, and it produced these hand-tinted-look views of landmarks and interiors for travelers and tourists. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897 as the library's new home, and its domed rotunda was among the most admired public interiors of the period. Readers in those years would have seen a room that was as much a showpiece of American ambition as a working library.
