Few rooms from this period survive in photographs as small and carefully colored as this one, a 6.5 by 10 centimeter albumen print mounted on board. It shows the reading room of the American Club of Bohemian Ladies in Prague, dating to about 1875 to 1890, when Bohemia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and clubs for women's reading, conversation, and self-improvement were becoming more common across European cities. The hand coloring was added to the albumen print by hand, so its tints of furniture, walls, and fabric are individual touches rather than mechanical ones. The print's modest size and mounting suggest it was made to be kept and shared, not displayed as a large public image.
