Drawn at Rappahannock Station in Virginia, this pencil sketch shows soldiers in an idle moment, with one man absorbed in a newspaper while others around him rest. The station had changed hands during the Civil War, and by early 1864 it was a Union camp for the Army of the Potomac, where long stretches of waiting were common. Edwin Forbes, who followed the army as a field artist, made many such quick studies of camp life, and his drawings give a close, unposed view of the soldiers' daily routines.
