The building in this view is the New York Public Library's main branch on Fifth Avenue, which was still under construction around 1908. It rose on the site of the old Croton Reservoir, whose basins had been removed a few years earlier. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-scale travel and city views, made the image on a glass negative. The picture records the library's Beaux-Arts design while its marble walls were still going up, before the building opened to the public in 1911.
