Rather than showing a battlefield or a recruit, this 1918 poster centers on the American Library Association's Library War Service, a wartime effort to put reading material in the hands of American servicemen. During the war the association gathered donated books and magazines and sent them to military camps, training sites and overseas posts, where they were shared in makeshift libraries. The poster belongs to the home-front campaign that asked civilians to contribute, and it reflects the period's view that reading could keep soldiers informed and occupied.
