This lithograph shows a library imagined as part of a modern city, drawn in color and published as plate 6 in *A Modern City*, a set of designs by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. Its London publisher, Benn Brothers, issued the volume around 1922, a period when European architects were rethinking public buildings with clean lines, open interiors, and little ornament. Mallet-Stevens, who was born in Belgium and worked mainly in Paris, became one of the leading voices of that modernist style. Because the plate comes from a book of designs, it shows an architect's vision of how a civic reading room might look rather than a building that stood in a particular place.
