This elevation shows the front of a Carnegie-funded public library in Taunton, Massachusetts, a city south of Boston. Andrew Carnegie gave grants for hundreds of American library buildings in the early 1900s, usually on the condition that towns supply the site and fund upkeep. Drawn in graphite with watercolor, the sheet lays out the facade's massing, entrance, and window rhythm, the details architects used to present civic buildings to clients and the public. The drawing was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a 1997 illustrated history of the United States.
